I have an easy way of helping you find balance to getting homework done. It requires a shift in thinking and a little practice on the part of yourself and your child.
And you need to realize, there is a cost to not dealing with this…
What Happens If You Choose To Ignore This?
What most people do when facing a reluctant child and a time limit to get the work done is they get frustrated, bribe, shout, plead and talk until they are blue in the face. But for most people, none of that works because…
- Your child may start off feeling defeated because each night is the same battle to get homework done.
- Your child cannot focus for longer than 25 minutes.
- Your child doesn’t like the subject being studied.
And what happens if you just do nothing? If you just keep doing what you’ve been doing?
You may continue to be frustrated and so will your child! His or her self-esteem may be affected.
How I Helped My Son Get His Homework Done
I searched for an easy way to explain to my son that he could control time when he focused intently. I found the solution in the book The Spirituality of Success: Getting Rich with Integrity.(1) Then I wrote a book for tweens including this skill in the book. It is entitled-Nine Ways to Empower Tweens with Emma and Elliot.
Here is an excerpt from the book Nine Ways to Empower Tweens with Emma and Elliot that explains this in more detail.
“In the book The Spirituality of Success: Getting Rich with Integrity (1), the author says: “Did you ever wonder why successful people seem to be able to get more done than the average person in the same amount of time? Is it because they work harder? Well, maybe, but my personal experience is that, for many reasons, successful people do not engage in hard work. The primary reason is, of course, that ‘if you are doing something you love to do, you’ll never do a hard day’s work in your life.’ This bit of wisdom is often passed on from generation to generation, but I believe it’s more than that. I believe that modern physics has the answer in Einstein’s theory of relativity. The secret lies in the fact that time is not rigid, but instead has an elastic quality that can be manipulated. Time can be controlled, and you have the power to control it.” He then goes on to explain that as we focus, we slow down time.
So, how does this information help you, and why should you care? Have you ever had to do homework that you hated doing? It took you forever to get it done because you either procrastinated or you simply disliked it so much you put little effort into it. Here are two rules our parents taught us:
- Always do what you dislike doing first. Then you can do the things you enjoy the most.
- Put intense focus on the things you dislike doing so you can get them done faster.
It makes sense to get the things you really dislike doing done as fast as you can. You do not need to understand Einstein’s theory of relativity to know that when you focus intently on something, you get the work done fast. Try the following experiment. Let’s say you dislike math homework. You have an assignment due tomorrow. You have one hour of homework to do, but you want to do it in thirty minutes. Put a clock at the end of the table you are working on, and set it for thirty minutes. Then, concentrate and focus on doing your math homework. The idea is to get as much done in thirty minutes without distractions. Focus, and get it done! Remember to congratulate yourself for your efforts! Did you do better than you thought you would? Pat yourself on the back.”
