Teach Kids to Value Quiet Time!

By Kathleen Boucher

Are you and your kids always on the go? Is their free time filled to the brim with activities after school and on weekends? Are they tired? When do they unwind, or are allowed to just ‘be’?

When do your children rejuvenate and regroup for the following week? Have you taught them some of the creative and healing properties of meditating or sitting in silence?  If not, why not?

There are different meditative techniques. It would fun to explore which ones they might like. For example, some types of meditation techniques are:

  • Vipassana Meditation
  • Mindfulness Meditation
  • Loving Kindness Meditation (Metta Meditation)
  • Mantra Meditation (OM Meditation)
  • Yoga Meditations

Spend time with your kids and find out which ones that they may find enjoyable. The bottom line is that your children should be given the opportunity to have a quiet time without the use of cell phones, tablets, computers etc.

Here are some benefits of practicing meditation for 20 minutes a day.

  1. Relieves stress
  2. Lessens worry, and anxiety
  3. Improves mood
  4. Increases relaxation and awareness
  5. Improves resilience
  6. Improves hypertension
  7. Improves breathing
  8. Improves mental strength and focus
  9. Better creative thinking
  10. Helps manage ADHD¹

If you are hesitant to teach your kids about meditation, because they never sit still, then I challenge you to consider this. The benefit of practicing meditation is a gift that you give your kids. Talk to them about how you’ll research with them the different types of meditation. Have them pick one that they like and practice it together. If this seems like too daunting a task then find an instructor who will show them how to do it. [You may need the benefits of meditation as much as your kids!] As they grow to love their alone time they may use it on a daily basis. You’ve just given them the means to relieve stress, unleash creativity and improve their mental focus.

How amazing does that make you feel? Wishing you and your children a healthy and happy life!
